Eqwise Youth Scheme Special Needs

Our vision is to provide innovative, caring and supportive life experiences, work opportunities and structured learning programmes for people of all ages and backgrounds who have specific difficulties and who would benefit from the therapeutic effects of working with animals, horticulture and the environment.

We specifically design courses that will assist young people with learning disabilities. The course involves building their own ‘assault course for a horse’, with a variety of methods that will provide assistance to help them achieve.

Special Benefits from working with horses include:

  • Utilises the unique relationship that exists between horses and people.
  • The horse as a ‘prey’ animal finds security in the heard and as such will ‘bond’ with people and seek to be led.
  • The horse’s behaviour will ‘mirror’ that of the person working with it and so responds to human body language, most especially working on the basis of mutual respect and trust.

Therapeutic Horticulture

Enjoy time in the veggie patch, planting seeds and cutting crops. Decorate your own plant pot and pick your own plants.

Therapeutic Horticulture can be especially beneficial:

  • Can alleviate depression
  • Promotes confidence and self-esteem
  • Promotes physical stimulation
  • Gives people a greater awareness and understanding of the natural environment
  • Promotes understanding of the cycle of life – planting seeds and nurturing new growth
  • Growing organic fruit and vegetables to consume – nutritional awareness as part of healthy living.
  • Raising plants from seeds and cuttings
  • Planting containers and hanging baskets
  • Making compost
